I have a hard time accepting that something is just inconvenient. There's always a better version, and I'd rather build it than get used to the bad one.
The clearest proof I have of that is a tank.
Two years as a K1E1 tank driver, and every field exercise ended the same way: four crew, four 20kg packs, and nowhere to put them. The tank was engineered down to the millimeter. The camo net had a spot. The tarp had a spot. We didn't. So we crammed our packs wherever they'd fit and lost time we didn't have.
I couldn't let it go. I sketched an add-on rack that clamped onto the frame behind the turret, pitched it to the officers, and started cutting steel. We welded, we failed, we cut again. A few burnt attempts later, it held all four packs and shaved minutes off every deployment.
Then something I didn't expect: other tank commanders saw it and built their own from my design.
My first shipped product was made of scrap steel.
The annoying thing is smaller now, and the fix is usually digital. But the instinct hasn't changed. Find the friction, ask why everyone put up with it, and build the better version.
